Ward 1 Update: Public Safety Summit, Budget Oversight

April 25: My 3rd Annual Ward 1 Public Safety Summit

Join me at my 3rd Annual Ward 1 Public Safety Summit where I bring together agencies and organizations working to address public safety as well as community members and the Metropolitan Police Department. This event is an annual opportunity for residents to get to know the teams serving their neighborhoods, learn more about public safety initiatives including the NEAR Act, and how to engage and support public safety efforts in the ward.

This year we’ll have MPD Chief Peter Newsham and Ward 1’s MPD District Commanders Randy Griffin and Stuart Emerman. We’ve also invited the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, U.S. Attorney’s Office, DPR’s Roving Leaders, Collaborative Solutions for Communities, Community Mediation DC, Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), Department of Behavioral Health, and District Bridges.

Everyone deserves to live in a community where they feel safe. I’m in regular communication with the police commanders for Ward 1 to relay concerns from constituents and to ensure police have the resources they need. Last year I co-introduced and voted for the NEAR Act, our comprehensive criminal justice reform bill, which is now fully funded, and I continue to track its implementation closely. I’m also fighting to reduce gun violence, end street harassment, and secured funding for gang violence prevention in Ward 1.

Budget Season Begins for the D.C. Council

Each spring, the DC Council reviews the Mayor’s proposed budget for the following year including hearings in each committee on specific agencies. As Chair of the Human Services Committee, I will be presiding over several budget oversight hearings to ensure the budget blueprint for the agencies under my committee’s purview will serve our residents well. Once the committee holds its budget oversight hearings and makes recommended changes, the full Council will debate and eventually pass next year’s budget. Learn more about the DC Council’s budget process here. Upcoming Human Services Committee budget oversight hearings:
