Nadeau to Congressional Republicans: Stay Out of Our Business

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau released the following statement in response to House Republican attempts to disapprove resolutions for two District laws:

“What’s wild is that there are those in Congress who think that the 700,000 citizens of the District of Columbia should not be allowed to set their own laws, unlike the citizens of every other state and municipality. The merits of these two pieces of legislation – which they have grossly misrepresented -- are nobody’s business but ours.

“There was a time when Congress – and Republicans especially loudly – took the idea of local independence in setting their own laws as sacrosanct. We in the District of Columbia do not agree with many of the laws set in Kentucky, Little Rock, and many other states and cities. Unless those laws violate the constitution or federal law, Congress does not overrule them.

“This is exactly why Congress must make D.C. the 51st state and end this unjust disenfranchisement and disingenuous and offensive meddling in local affairs.”
