Dear Mr. Lofland,

I am writing in support of the members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 as they continue to bargain with you over the wages and working conditions of 25,000 working people in the region. These working families are the foundation of the vibrant communities we have in the District and Ward 1.

I stand with Local 400 in support of these working families and hope that you will come to an agreement that provides them with the living wages, affordable and accessible health care, stable schedule, and retirement security that they have earned through their years of dedicated service to your company. Safeway is one of the top grocery stores in the area because your employees provide a customer service experience that keeps people coming back to shop. I am always supportive of bringing and keeping good employers in the District and Ward 1. I believe a mutually agreeable result to these negotiations will prove Safeway to be that kind of employer.

I plan to continue closely monitoring these negotiations and stand ready to support my constituents, your employees, in every way I can as the collective bargaining process continues. I expect that you will do the right thing and continue to make the kinds of investments in your employees and our community that makes us strong.
