DC Council Condemns Anti-Muslim Bigotry - Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Resolution from Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau expresses solidarity with Muslims amid escalation in rhetoric by political figures

WASHINGTON – Reacting to an alarming increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric this election season, members of the DC Council unanimously co-introduced a resolution today condemning anti-Muslim bigotry and expressing solidarity with Muslims and all those targeted for their ethnicity, race or religion. The resolution, authored by Ward 1 DC Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, was inspired in part by the experience of her Jewish ancestors in Europe who faced anti-Semitism.

"Generations of my Jewish ancestors experienced anti-Semitism in Europe and that experience has always led me to believe in the importance of all of us standing up as allies," said Councilmember Nadeau. "Today we are expressing our support for our Muslim community, and making it clear that bigotry and hatred are not welcome in our communities. This year during Ramadan, I had the opportunity to join Ward 1 residents in prayer at the Taraweeh service. During my visit, I talked with Muslim DC residents who were concerned, even afraid about the anti-Muslim bigotry in our country, the hatred that has even resulted in violence in some parts of our country."

The resolution recalls that our nation was founded by immigrants, many fleeing religious persecution, who enshrined freedom of religion as one of our nation’s fundamental legal and ethical principles. It highlights that Muslims have fought and died in every major war beginning with the Revolutionary War. Today there are more than 3 million Muslims living in the US, with a significant portion living in the District. They make invaluable contributions to our economy, our social and political life and our culture.
