Fighting Back Against Hate and Bigotry - Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Flagsmall.jpgI know the election last week has raised fears within our diverse community, and there is quite a bit of uncertainty about what life will be like in our city under a new administration. It’s difficult to assuage the fears I’m hearing, that families may be separated under new immigration policies, that people may be persecuted based on race and religion. But I want you to know that as a local leader, I will do all I can to protect our residents, and that I will join you in solidarity. I will keep fighting for racial equality in all we do, will keep supporting our LGBT community, and will raise my voice against bigotry and persecution.

Earlier this year I introduced two resolutions to stand up against persecution. The first, the Condemnation of Anti-Muslim Bigotry Resolution of 2016, sought to express solidarity with residents who had expressed their fears to me about the way Muslims are being treated across the country and in our community. All my fellow Councilmembers have signed on.

The second, the Sense of the Council Regarding Federal Immigration Raids Resolution of 2016  will have a hearing tomorrow and I know many of you plan to come testify. The resolution calls for an end to federal raids targeting Central American refugees and for protecting immigrant children and families as full members of the community.

My family immigrated to the United States several generations ago, fleeing religious persecution that Jewish people faced in Europe. They built their lives here in America, which has always been a refuge to people under threat. That America is the one I know and love, and that America is not lost to us. But we will have to keep fighting for it.

Each of us has a responsibility, now more than ever, to stand up for our neighbors who are vulnerable against hate and bigotry. I hope you will join me in my efforts, and show your support to others.

Sincerely,
