Statement on recent hate crime attack on U Street

Ward 1 is a community that does not tolerate hate crimes. Rather, we celebrate all of the distinct identities of our Ward. I am outraged by the brutal attack that took place on U Street, at the heart of our community, and have been in contact with the police. I was glad that they quickly apprehended three suspects. I am disappointed, however, at the announcement by the US Attorney’s office, which handles the prosecution of adults in matters such as this, that they did not feel they had a strong enough case to press charges on the adult suspect at this time. I will continue pressing the US Attorney’s office to seek justice for the victims of this horrific crime. I have also reached out to the Office of DC Attorney General Karl Racine, who is responsible for prosecuting the juveniles in this case, and I appreciate his position on this matter.

This attack came during Pride Month, which is a celebration of love and how far we’ve come. This attack, as well as the tragic recent murders of trans women of color in the region, remind us we must never waver in the fight to make sure every LGBTQ+ resident is as safe, welcome, and supported as they deserve to be. It can take great courage to live your truth. I want every Ward 1 resident to know they are welcome here.
